Quickly Hide Your Desktop Icons on Mac with this Quick Tip

Quickly Hide Your Desktop Icons on Mac with this Quick Tip

Posted by Rainey

I treat my desktop like any other directory on my computer and it is always a mess with icons and screen shots.  This doesn’t really both me but when I am doing a demo or presentation I inevitably get a comment like, “man, ever clean that desktop?”  To which I want to say, “no, do you ever clean your downloads folder?” So, obviously not everyone thinks of the desktop the same way I do.  I guess we ould debate whether having a desktop is even useful, but why and who really has time for something like that.

So, with this little trick I can make my “desktop” look pretty for people viewing my computer, while still treating it as a temporary directory that I can access and use. Let’s do it!

First, open Terminal. Wait, don’t leave, it’s not bad all. Once you have Terminal open type:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false

Hit enter and then type:

killall Finder

This will restart the finder and you are done.  The files are no longer visible on the desktop but still in the desktop folder. To reverse this simply type:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool true

killall Finder

Here is a quick video that shows how this is done. I know there are other apps that do similar things for $5 but why?
