Opera Next

Opera Next

Posted by Rainey

Big news on the browser front, Opera just released their new browser.  This new browser is called “Opera Next” and runs on webkit with a slew of new features. This new version of Opera looks great, moved to webkit, moved search into the address bar and includes these more unique features:

  • Speed Dial – a front page bookmark screen of your favorite sites with an iOS like “foldering” system.
“Opera’s popular shortcuts start page has been refreshed to make exploring web content easier and smarter. Speed Dial shortcuts can now be gathered in folders and easily filtered. Drag and drop one Speed Dial entry on top of another to create a folder, or use the new Speed Dial search field to experience the power of visual Speed Dial entries combined with the flexibility and organization of a classic bookmark folder.”
  • Discover – mix StumbleUpon and paper.li and you get a feature that allows you to choose a category and easily find related content.
“Pick and choose your category: news, food, technology or something else you are more interested in. Opera brings you a selection of relevant global and regional sources to discover web content more easily.”
  • Stash – a way to place interesting websites aside while browsing or searching.
“Simply hit the heart icon in the address bar to collect the websites you want to compare easily while shopping, or to keep your travel research on hotels, sights and flights at your fingertips. Scan your Stash by resizable page preview, or search what you’ve saved, with keywords.”

After installing Opera, I am really impressed.  It is clean, fun to use and different enough to get attention. I also love that, since it is on webkit, it uses the same developer tools that I am used to and love. So, I am going to try driving this thing around for the next couple of weeks to see how runs day to day.

If you decide to take it for a spin, you will need to get it from the link below instead of the main download page:
