UPDATE: Lawmakers are backing away from the SOPA and Protect IP bills, but these bills are still not completely dead. Reddit, Wikipedia and others are still planning a 24 hour blackout for Wednesday, January 18.  SOPAblackout.org has published a little script that allows anyone running a website to participate in the SOPA blackout.  They even have a handy SOPA Blackout WordPress plugin.

You may have heard some talk of Protect IP and SOPA by now, up for vote in January.  In a nut shell, opposers of this bill fear:

  • It will bring government internet censorship like seen in China to the States.
  • Content creators will have their sites shutdown for so much as linking to a site infringing the new legislation.
  • Sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and the like may never have come into existence with such laws in place and the future for new startups will become bleak.
